Due to extensive trail work over the past two years, new maps of Camp Workcoeman were needed. Furthermore, the Connecticut statewide spring 2016 orthoimagery was recently released, provide a new data source for updating buildings and land cover. As with my previous mapping, I walked the rerouted trails using a SkyTraq-based receiver that records raw carrier-phase and pseudorange data and post-processed the data using RTKLIB and CORS data from the nearby CTWI site in Winchester. In revising the trail center map, I took the oppertunity to improve it with additional hand-placed labels¹ and various minor tweaks.

Updated maps are on the campworkcoeman.org maps page. The data is bundled in the Camp Workcoeman Map App. The web app has been updated, and an update to the Android version, which is fully-offline, is forthcoming.

Camp Workcoeman Map App

Although I started mapping Camp Workcoeman years ago, I’ve always published this data as printed maps (and PDFs). I finally published my map in a different form: a mobile and web app. The apps are built using Mapbox GL, native for the Android app and JS for the web app.¹ The Android version is completely offline, with the map data and style files bundled as assets. The full source code for both is available on GitHub. Download the app for Android or visit the web app (and add it to the home screen on iOS).

Due to Apple’s developer fees and requirement to use OS X for development, there’s no native iOS version; I might reconsider this if there’s enough demand. ↩

Camp Workcoeman Website Redesign

I spent the last few weeks redesigning the Camp Workcoeman website. The site design is based on Bootstrap, without the jQuery components, and makes heavy use of SVGs. In addition, the header dynamically responds to the time of day—the sun’s out during the day, and the stars are out at night. Using SunCalc.js, it fairly accurately displays the sun and moon. Jekyll is used for templating and site generation.

Compare this to the old site, which was completely static HTML and Flash, making updates difficult.

Camp Workcoeman Land Acquisitions

Since last summer, I’ve been working on a map of Camp Workcoeman. A time consuming aspect of that has been finding and mapping the property bounds, and I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching the deeds for the various parcels. While this gave me an idea of what was acquired when, it was still words, headings, and distances on paper that don’t do the real world geography justice. I have therefore compiled a map of the parcels, including when the camp acquired the land and from whom, which is far more illuminating.

I’m still not entirely sure on the relative sizes of the three strips just north of the New Hartford / Barkhamsted town line. Determining that more precisely, if it’s even possible, requires another trip to New Hartford Town Hall to look at older deeds.

Storm over West Hill Pond

Last night, severe weather was forecasted in the West Hill Pond, New Hartford, Connecticut area. Fortunately, the worst of the storm never made it here. There was only a little rain and wind, but there was plenty of lightning.
