I recently stumbled across your original method and had some success with it. Sadly very large folded or rolled maps presented various problems, not least stitching very large documents.

I have been toying with a dslr and tripod setup, which sounds fairly similar to this method but I'm yet to achieve satisfactory results, mainly because I need to read fairly small text clearly. I may end up with a hybrid approach. The speed of photographing portions and a software merge with hugin.

I also don't have a large sheet of glass at my disposal, which would make life easier!
